EKM003 - DCDC Converter step-up/down 3-16V / 3.3V/5V

Part.no: 41022468 hero EKM003 is a simple voltage regulator capable of both stepping up (boost) and stepping down (buck). Regulation is handled automatically and without interruption. The input voltage can vary between 3V and 16V while the output remains fully stable at either 3.3V or 5V.

The output voltage is set to 5V by default and can be changed to 3.3V by connecting the VSEL input to GND. Maximum current draw depends on input and output voltage. The regulator chip handles up to 2A. For a more detailed description of current capability, see the graphs in the TPS63070 datasheet pg.28.

For normal use, only IN+/- and OUT+/- need to be connected. For more advanced use, see the description under usage. Included are screw terminals for direct cable connection and a pin header that can be cut to length as needed and used for both input/output and the additional configuration inputs.

Usage

For normal use (5V output and a maximum load of 600mA), simply connect a power source and a load. If the load is greater than 600mA during startup, the regulation can fail and prevent normal operation. Startup takes roughly 100ms. After startup, the regulator can supply more current without problem.

Maximum current draw is limited by the internal FET switch, which has a hard limit of 2A. Maximum current draw from the regulator depends on supply voltage and output voltage. Detailed graphs are available in TPS63070 datasheet pg.28.

The supply voltage at startup must be 3V or higher. After startup the regulator will operate normally down to around 2V.

Note that the module has no protection against reversed polarity. Make sure that + and - are connected correctly or the regulator will be damaged. The regulator does have built in protection against overvoltage, short circuit and excessive temperature.

The holes on the board allow mounting either a pin header with 2.54mm pitch or a screw terminal with 3.5mm pitch. It is also possible to solder wires directly to the holes.

The module has three functions that can be activated by pulling the input low (short to GND). The holes have a 2.54mm pitch and fit standard pin headers. For a permanent configuration, wires can be soldered directly to the pads.

EN: Turns the regulator off when the voltage on EN is lower than 0.8V. The EN input is connected to a comparator with 100mV hysteresis and therefore works with signals that change slowly. The input is normally high (regulator operational) when left unconnected.

VSEL: Output voltage selector. If the input is pulled low (GND), the output voltage is 3.3V. If left unconnected the output voltage is 5V.

PS: Input for setting the regulator in two different modes or for synchronizing the regulation to an external clock signal. When the input is pulled low (GND), the regulator operates in Fixed PWM mode, which provides more stable regulation at the cost of efficiency. Suitable for applications where stable output voltage is more important than battery life. When the input is left unconnected the regulator operates in Power Save mode and provides significantly better efficiency at lighter loads, but slightly reduced regulation (3% versus 1%). It is also possible to connect the input to an external clock signal to synchronize multiple modules. The clock frequency must be in the range 2.1 to 2.8MHz. Without an external clock signal the internal oscillator runs at 2.4MHz.

GND: Ground connection (0V). Provides a convenient way to bridge the three inputs.
