EKM030 Electronic Switch with Current Sense 18V 11A

Part.no: 41036495

img-hero

EKM030 is a breakout board featuring the smart High-Side FET switch BTS7008 with integrated diagnostics and current sensing. The module is perfect for controlling power to a connected load using regular logic signals while also monitoring the current drawn by the load.

The switch will handle any resistive, inductive and capacitive load with up to 11A continous current. The rated voltage for the switch is 18V, but it can be used with voltages up to 28V without damage and up to 35V intermittently.

The power stage contains a current mirror that will output a proportional current to the load. The module converts this current to a voltage suitable for monitoring using an analog input of a connected microcontroller. Default scaling for the current sensing is 0.3V/A which makes a full-scale reading of 3.3V at 11A. A solder jumper can be cut to increase the scaling to 0.5V/A for use with 5V systems, where a full-scale will be 5.5V at 11A.

The module is protected against over-voltage, reverse voltage and loss of ground and over-temperature.

Connections

Control Input

pinout-input

Set the IN pin high to activate the output. The pin works with 3.3V and 5V logic levels.

Diagnostic Enable

pinout-input

DEN is a logic input and is pulled high using a 4.7k resistor. If not used, leave unconnected. As long as DEN is high, diagnostic information and current readings will be sent to OUT pin. Pull low to reset any fault condition.

The pin can also be pulled low to decrease current consumption by the module if current sensing or diagnostic output is not required.

pinout-input

Cut EN_PU to remove the pullup resistor for DEN pin.

Current Sense

pinout-input

The OUT pin is a combined output and will output a voltage proportional to the load current. The voltage is scaled to output 0.3V/A by default (can be changed to 0.5V/A by cutting the SCALE solder jumper). Please note that the output must be calibrated using a known load current.

The VL pin sets the clamp voltage to prevent the output from damaging a connected microcontroller. VL should be the same voltage as the ADC reference voltage to which OUT is connected.

If any fault condition is triggered, the pin will no longer report current readings and stay at a fixed level (see datasheet for mor information). The driver will trigger a fault condition on short circuit, over temperature, open load, and inverse current.

pinout-input

Solder jumper to set voltage scaling for the current sensing.

Short (default): 0.3V/A Open: 0.5V/A

Supply Voltage

pinout-input

The high current voltage supply is designed for a nominal voltage of 12V and should be in the range of 6 - 18V. An extended voltage range from 4.1V to 28V is acceptable, but with slightly worse specifications regarding accuracy of the current sensing, protection thresholds and switching times. Inductive loads can create higher voltages intermittently and the driver will handle up to 35V for short durations without damage.

Make sure the connected power supply can handle the full power required by the load.

Output

pinout-input

Connect the load to these pins. GND should connect to the negative terminal and is always connected to the power supply ground. OUT should connect to the positive terminal of the load and is only connected when IN is high.

Both the VIN/GND and GND/OUT pins can be used with the included screw terminals, 2.54mm pitch pin headers or wires soldered directly to the board.
