Module featuring the well-known angular position sensor AS5600 from Infineon (Osram). The sensor detects magnetic fields from a nearby magnet and provides absolute rotation readings. EKM040 can be used to create a highly robust non-contact potentiometer or encoder with absolute position.

The sensor communicates via I2C using Qwiic connectors and also features an auxillary output that provides a proportional analog voltage or PWM signal.

Connections

Voltage supply

The module is powered with 3.3V (3.0 and 3.6V). Supply voltage and ground reference is connected to V+ and GND.

If the module is connected using the Qwiic connectors, leave V+ and GND unconnected.


I2C / Qwiic

Connections for I2C are available both as solder-free Qwiic connectors and as through-holes for wires or pin headers with 2.54mm pitch.

The board comes with 10kohm pullup resistors for SCL and SDA. The solder bridge marked "I2C PU" can be severed if external pullups are used.


Analog / PWM output (OUT)

The OUT pin will provide an analog voltage, proportional to the measured angle. The output can be used for analog systems without a microcontroller or together with an AD converter.

The output can be programmed via I2C to instead provide a PWM signal.


Direction (DIR)

The DIR connection sets the direction of rotation. If left unconnected, the presented values will increase when the magnet is rotated clockwise (magnet placed on the top side).

If the solder jumper is shorted or the DIR pin is pulled to V+, the direction is reversed and values will instead decrease when the magnet is rotated clockwise. Direction should be changed if the magnet is placed on the bottom side of the PCB.


Programming / Calibration (PGO)

Default values and end calibration can be done in cases where the user doesn't want to send configuration data on each startup or intend to use the module without an attached microcontroller.

Complete documentation for the PGO pin is found in the AS5600 datasheet (pg. 22).


Warning

The memory used when programming default values using the PGO pin is non-volatile and can only be written to once (OTP, One Time Programmable). Read the documentation carefully and make sure the correct settings are written as they can't be changed again!
